Copper Valley Chamber Visitor Center Sees Extremely High Use In The Summer Of 2014

Alaska's Independent Tourism Turns A Corner: At The Hub!

Large numbers of visitors are coming to the Greater Copper Valley Chamber's
visitor center.
Talking with travelers in the visitor center.

The Greater Copper Valley Chamber's recent renovations came just in time. This summer, the number of travelers out on Alaska's road system is extraordinarily high. We haven't seen this many cars, campers and motor homes in the Hub parking lot in Glennallen, since 2008.

Although the Copper Valley is largely volunteer-run, on a small budget, this doesn't mean that it is not a key destination point for independent travelers in Alaska. And the intense use of the visitor center this summer shows that.

Ahtna Wins The 4th Of July Parade Float Contest

By Greg Boyd, Parade Committee

This year’s festivities were better than ever!   Mother Nature cooperated in fine style and blessed us with an awesome day, sunny and warm.  We had nearly 30 parade participants and a substantial viewing crowd for the parade– a great turnout all around!

Our local political candidates, Eric Feige, Jim Colver and George Rauscher traveled from Palmer to participate in the parade.  Smokey the Bear greeted the children, while the fire truck sirens announced their arrivals towards the end of the parade.

Congratulations to Ahtna Heritage for their float with dancers, our first place prize winner, which won $100 from Glennallen DMV.  Red Eagle Lodge had another wonderful float this year and won second prize, a $75 gift certificate to Gakona Gallery.  The Old Paths Baptist Church took third prize, a $50 dinner for two at Gakona Lodge.  An honorable mention goes to the BLM/Parks Service float “A Loo with a View”, attended by Christy the Sasquatch.

Race marshall Rose Tyone

A big thank you, Copper River Record and KCAM, for getting the word out!
Also, thank you to our Troopers for traffic control during the event.

A big thank you goes out to all the float participants, including our Grand Marshalls this year, Lonnie and Rose Tyone; the judges, Polly Egger and Cathy Ulrich; and a special thank you to the prize sponsors!

Elizabeth and Sarah Mailly
Following the parade, we all had a fun day at the park!  Thank you to the  VFW and the American Legion for conducting the flag raising ceremony.  Thank you to the Lions Club for the awesome Salmon Bake – delicious!  We all enjoyed the guitar music and singing by Billy Williams!  Thank you to those who headed up activities for the kids:  Helen Hui and the PHLAK  group for the Cardboard Carnival;  Todd and Kim Roeske of Mt. Drum Lutheran Church for games; Jerry Lesemann for the megaphone loan again this year; and my wife, Jo Boyd, for the face painting table.

And of course, a Really Big Thank You to all those who donated prizes for the games at the Park:   Chocolate Spoon Espresso, First National Bank Alaska, IGA, and Sparks.  The kids really love the prizes!  Polly Egger and I ran the prize table.

We had some new activities at Pinneo Park this year – and that was great!  Arguably the most popular were the horseback rides offered by Elizabeth and Sarah Mailly, our young Copper Valley entrepreneurs.

BLM/National Park Service "View From The Loo" Float

They were busy all afternoon!  Mt Drum Lutheran Church had a funnel cake booth; Laura Scott also made some yummy deserts; and BLM handed out free samples for the “GO anywhere toilet kit”. Hats off to all our vendors this year!

The Greater Copper Valley Chamber of Commerce kicked off a raffle event at the Park.  Thank you to all those who bought tickets.
